My focus for this week is the words that I speak.  I had never quite noticed the frequency of Jesus teaching on the subject, in this case in the middle of Matthew.Matthew 15.18 says, “But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.” and earlier in chapter 13 Jesus says this:

‎Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit.
You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.
The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil.
But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.
For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.

He pulls no punches, does He?  And so this week I know what I must learn – I need to think before I speak!  So often I can let slip the dogs of war, dig the not-so-joking joke or simply jump in with both feet.  And as someone who aspires to preach and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ… yeah, I need to be careful with my words. Now, that’s not to say that I’m going to become humourless (or, at least, I hope not!), I just hope that my words will be worthy of the calling that Christ has put upon my life (whatever that may actually turn out to be).
